Natural gas is odourless and colourless made from hydrocarbons largely consisting of methane. It is a naturally occurring process created from organic material found deep within the earth's crust around oil deposits. An odour is added to natural gas for safety reasons to make it easily detectable. The main uses for natural gas in a residential installation are hot water, cooking and heating.
