Q. How do I get connected?
A. Complete a Powerco Residential Gas Application form. Send to Powerco submit on-line, post, fax or contact us on 0800 243 842.
 
Q. Is gas available in my street?
A. To find out if natural gas is in your street click here.
Natural gas is available in most areas.
 
Q. Do I need to have chosen my gas appliances to arrange a gas connection?
A. Yes - To apply for a gas connection, you must have chosen the gas appliances you will install.
 
Q. How much will it cost to get connected?
A. If natural gas is available in your street, you may be entitled to a subsidised new connection to the value of $2,000, when you install a natural gas hot water or central heating system.
 
Q. How long will it take to get connected?
A. It takes approximately 20 working days to get you connected to natural gas, after Powerco has approved your gas connection application.
 
Q. Who are the energy retailers that I connect with?
A. Energy retailers that you can connect with are, Contact Energy, Genesis Energy and *Wanganui Gas
*Wanganui Gas is unable to retail to consumers in the Hutt Valley and Porirua networks.
 
Q. Will my driveway be dug up?
A. A small trench may be dug. When the gas service pipe is in place, the property will be reinstated.
 
Q. Is gas safe?
A. Yes. As long as the installation and appliances are up to standard, gas is very safe. Modern appliances are fitted with safety devices to automatically shut off the appliance if the flame goes out for any reason.
 
Q. What can I use natural gas for?
A. The most common residential use is for hot water, heating and cooking.
 
Q. Is there plenty of gas for my home?
A. As the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has stated, while there are changes ahead with gas supply for generating electricity there is plenty of gas for residential uses including gas hot water, cooking and heating. In fact the more we use directly instead of electricity, the better it is for our countrys electricity supply and environment.
